As Musk comes out of Stoge, a look back in previous efforts to cut off waste, fraud and abuse, and how they came out

As Elon Musk moves away from his official role in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), he joins a history of presidential administrations that have tried to streamline the Government, with mixed results.

While the former presidents Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson and Grover Cleveland attempted to reduce the size of the judiciary, treasure and civil service, respectively, it was not until the twentieth century that the federal government grew up in the bureaucratic behavior that has attracted the attention of the type of DO.

Although they were often seen as the biggest expenses, some Democrats joined Republicans in the 1990’s to reduce government size and to make the taxpayers more responsible.

“We know that the great government does not have all the answers,” said former President Bill Clinton during his 1996 Union state.

While he started as a conservative pragmatist, Reagan’s later years saw that the budget deficits grew and the national debt is more than twice. The Dow also lost almost a quarter of its value in “Black Monday”, October 19, 1987.

The other contemporary president known for trying to “do” the Government was Texas Democrat Lyndon Johnson. LBJ was known for quickly expanding the government through its “great society” social programs, but it also aimed to streamline the pentagon and defense apparatus.

The efforts to the Pentagon failed to greatly, as the ongoing Vietnam War also accentuated the expensive balance sheets.

The Secretary of Defense, Robert McNamara, a Kennedy Holdover and former head of the Ford motor company, was employed to make changes to the Pentagon.

He instituted what was called a planning program budget system, which sought to provide a more rationalized approach to managing the pentagon budget.
